What do you do it to?

Last night, I got quite a lot of work done on Kingscot as I watched the undeniably execrable yet oddly compulsive Take Me Out. One of the things I love most about knitting is its compatibility with other activities - chatting to friends, listening to music, or, in this case, watching programmes featuring Paddy McGuinness, thirty single ladies and the catchphrase 'No likey, no lighty'.

I enjoy the symmetry of knitting to podcasts about knitting: Stash and Burn, Never Not KnittingDoubleknit, and the infrequent but inspired Insubordiknit are my favourites. Recently, however, I have been attempting to aurally submerge myself in the Laahndahn accent for a play, and so have found myself sucked in to Eastenders (Archie's murder! Stacey's pregnancy! Roxy getting the Vic!), as well as listening to this excellent cd. All of this has made me curious what other people make stuff to. Have you discovered an exciting new band? Have you been revisiting the early films of Ingmar Bergman? Do you find a zen-like silence to be a better conduit to craft? Leave a comment, and let me know!

  1. For me, it depends on what I'm doing. Last night I tried knitting the most basic scarf while watching a movie I hadn't seen, but after about 5 dropped stitches I decided it wasn't a very good idea. But when I'm making jewelry or sewing I like to watch movies or TV shows that I've seen before. Movies from my childhood or Disney or old Project Runway episodes. That way if I tune out for a moment, I haven't missed too much. Beautiful work on the Kingscot. Can't wait to see the finished product!

  2. I usually have the TV on in the background while I'm knitting or crocheting... Sometimes I sit at my computer desk and chat with friends between rows.

  3. I'm rediscovering London. Every Wednesday my boyfriend are coming up with new interesting things to do. He calls these activity days while I call them date nights :-). Last Wednesday we went to an amazing show called Oper Opis, that opened the London Mime Festival. This week we're going to a landscape photographer exhibition at the National Theatre. I've also rediscovered sewing and how much I actually enjoy it!

  4. Saturday was Air Crash day on Discovery so sewed to back to back Air Crash Investigation - it gave me nightmares. RTE (Irish radio) is good in the afternoon - I love their phone-ins. I keep checking Amazon for a cheap unabridged audiobook of Lord of the Rings because after several false starts I know I'll never be able to keep up the momentum reading it myself and think it'd be perfect for crafting away to in the cold months.
I love watching Kingscot take shape - such a beautiful colour.

  6. Sometimes I listen to the radio (especially if there's a play on) or an audiobook, or chat to someone (in person being easier than on the phone - although speakerphone is a wonderful thing!), or maybe watch a film - I've been watching quite a lot of Woody Allen recently and have been really enjoying his films for the most part. I also really like knitting whilst watching period dramas!
Kingscot is beautiful... my jealousy seems to grow along with it!

  7. Wow, that color is so beautiful (as is your knitting, of course!). I usually knit while watching movies with friends or with Nate. I love how knitting allows me to feel productive while I waste time, haha!
